Dongfeng Sedan (Dongfeng Golden Dragon)

Core Characteristics and Technical Specifications

Debuting in 1958, the Dongfeng sedan (codename CA71, widely known as the "Dongfeng Golden Dragon") holds the honour of being the first passenger car entirely designed and built by the Chinese, developed by Changchun First Automobile Works.

Underpinned by a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive (FR) petrol powertrain layout, the car was powered by a domestically reverse-engineered and upgraded 1.9-litre inline four-cylinder overhead valve (OHV) petrol engine delivering a maximum output of 70 hp, mated to an in-house developed 3-speed manual gearbox.

Styling-wise, the Dongfeng sedan married distinct traditional motifs with the prevailing international design language of its era: the front fascia featured a "Hefei"-inspired chrome front grille flanked by twin round headlamps and a Ruyi-shaped front bumper, while the rear was styled with pronounced, tiered fishtail fins.

Inside, the cabin was tailored to the passenger needs of the era, appointed in fabric and synthetic leather upholstery. A bespoke, hand-crafted golden dragon emblem took pride of place at the centre of the steering wheel, symbolising the pioneering and independent spirit of China's nascent automotive industry.

Market Positioning and Historical Evolution

The arrival of the Dongfeng sedan shattered the historical notion that China "could only manufacture commercial lorries and not passenger cars", officially ushering the nation's automotive sector into a new era of proprietary passenger car development.

In May 1958, the first trial prototype was successfully completed and driven to Zhongnanhai to be presented to state leaders; Chairman Mao Zedong personally rode in the vehicle and praised it highly.

Although constrained by the nation's limited industrial foundation and economic conditions at the time, which prevented full-scale commercial mass production, the project provided invaluable engineering experience and nurtured vital technical talent for the subsequent birth of the revered Hongqi luxury limousine line-up.

As the definitive trailblazer of China's self-developed automotive sector, it holds a monumental, unshakeable position in the annals of motoring history.

Current Preservation Status and Maintenance Standards

Revered as an irreplaceable national treasure in Chinese automotive history, surviving examples of the Dongfeng sedan are carefully preserved by the FAW Group Classic Car Centre alongside national-level museums.

Ongoing maintenance and storage adhere strictly to museum-grade conservation standards: the vehicle is housed in a purpose-built facility with strict, round-the-clock climate and humidity control to protect its steel chassis, hand-formed sheet metal, vintage paintwork, and cabin materials from environmental degradation and wear.

On the mechanical front, given the absolute historical rarity and irreplaceable nature of the original parts, all routine maintenance and mechanical servicing are carried out under the meticulous supervision of senior classic car restoration specialists.

Whenever put on public display, the vehicle is protected by strict physical security cordons with all physical contact and unauthorised operation strictly prohibited, ensuring that this founding icon of China's passenger car industry remains impeccably preserved for generations to come.
